Going Green
Ashmount now has its very own Green Team! Members of the Team are responsible for ensuring that their classes are turning off lights and projectors, recycling paper and composting fruit waste. The Green Team are already doing a brilliant job, and over the next few months they will be working alongside the School Council on various green projects.
On 10 March 2009, during Science Week, Ashmount held a Green Day to reflect on ways we can help our environment. The school took part in Earth Hour, a WWF event to raise awareness of climate change. During Earth Hour we worked in darkness as we 'powered down' and turned all the lights and electrical items off. All the children thought carefully about what changes they could make to their lifestyle to help the environment. Every pupil made a Green Pledge, and these have now been displayed on our Green Noticeboard. Here are just a few:
Almas (Nursery) 'I will put things in the Recycle bin.'
Aiden (Nursery) 'I will come to school on my bike.'
Tariq (Year 1) 'I will turn the lights off.'
Nathaniel (Year 6) 'I pledge to switch off my plug sockets when I am not using them.'
We would love parents to make a Green Pledge too and join us on our road to sustainability.
On Green Day we held a green fashion show, with outfits made entirely of rubbish! The children also wrote their own songs about recycling and the environment, which they recorded on our music studio - click below to listen to some of the songs composed by pupils in Year 4.
And why not join in with the new song that everyone at Ashmount is learning from the Sing Up Song Bank - Recycle It! Click to listen and practise at home.
The combination of our very successful Green Day and the efforts of the Green Team has resulted in the school achieving the Bronze Award from Eco-Schools, an international organisation that guides schools towards embedding the principles of sustainability into the heart of school life. As the year goes on we will be working towards the Silver Award, and then the prestigious Green Flag, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity.
